Santorini travel guide

If you are planning a trip to Greece, make sure you go to Santorini. And if this is your first time visiting Santorini, here’s my travel guide in which I’ve included everything from where to stay, where to eat, what to do and which beaches to visit.

WHERE TO STAY

In terms of where to stay, there are plenty of options on Santorini.

I stayed in Oia which is the traditional part of Santorini and has the most beautiful view points for sunset, I loved its charming houses with the colorful façades perched on the edge of the cliffs. It is the most romantic part of the island. You can get an Airbnb or a hotel: I recommend the cave Suite Oia where you will get your private jacuzzi and the view is incredible. But you need to know that it is the most touristy spot on the island so it can be very crowded during Summer.

Your second option is to stay in Fira which has more of a city life with lots of lively restaurants and nightclubs.

And of course Perivolos which is by the beach. I stayed there this time and choose Orabel Suites Santorini, we got a duplex suite with our private jacuzzi, the location was perfect, walking distance to the best beaches and the staff was amazing!

THE BEACHES

Santorini has a red, black and white sand beach. This is due to the fact that it is a volcanic island. You need to see Ammoudi Bay if you love rocks and want to cliff jump!

I also recommend to go see the Red Beach which is absolutely stunning.  It’s not the best place to sunbathe given its size and rockiness but it is a must seen when visiting Santorini.

Finally, the black beach of Perivolos is where I have been going almost everyday the past week. Perivilos Beach is a famous location for wedding receptions and it is the most cosmopolitan and lively beach resort in Santorini. The beach is covered in black lava sand, there is a whole bunch of sun lounges with umbrellas, music with dj’s and many water sport options, like jet skiing, windsurfing and scuba diving. Some of the beach bars provide swimming pools where you can relax while you enjoy your favorite cocktail. Mine is a good Dirty Martini hehe.

WHERE TO EAT

Ice cream lovers, you must try Lolita’s Gelato in Oia! I am not an ice cream person but I have been there every single time I was in Oia, their home made ice cream is simply incredible!

Every restaurant at Ammoudi Bay is worth trying if you like grilled fish. I love The Fish Tavern, Katina and The Sunset Tavern. You will east fresh fish and try the most delicious octopus and squid you’ve ever had while enjoying the best sunset view in Santorini.

If you are looking for something fancy and romantic with a view, I recommend Fly Away and Alila, my two favourites! Both offer an open air dining area around the pool with a view over the sea and the volcanos. The cocktail are truly amazing, it is an incredible gastronomy experience.

Seaside Santorini, Pepito and Jojo were my favorite beach restaurants in Perissa. Very cool atmosphere and great food.

Finally, you need to try traditional Greek restaurants and order different starters such as grilled squids, fava, fried eggplants… I would say almost every place in Santorini offers fantastic food.

WHAT TO DO

Finally, what to do in Santorini…

Rent a quad ( ATV), it costs approximately 30 euros per day and allows you to visit the island. Santorini sunsets are globally known to be the best in the world, so you can’t miss them. Watch them from Oia, Ammudi Bay, it is the best! Go do some shopping in Fira, the main town of Santorini, where the view over the volcanos is incredible. There is plenty of beautiful jewelry, pottery, linen sundresses, hats and bathing suits. Enjoy some time by the beach. Go see the Red Beach at Akrotiri and swim at the black beach in Perissa. Santorini has a number of archaeological sites and museums that are worth visiting. The history of the island and how it was formed is fascinating, visiting the ruins and excavation sites is one of the most unique things to do in Santorini. Go wine tasting. I am a red wine kinda girl, I normally don’t drink white wine but couldn’t get enough of the ones from Santorini. And of course, go explore the island, there is so much beauty everywhere and the people are the nicest!
